Dissertation Research Awards for Berkeley Graduate Students

The Institute of Business and Economic Research (IBER) is provides small donor funded Dissertation Research Grants by UC Berkeley Graduate Students in the Ph.D. programs in Agricultural & Resource Economics, Business, Demography, Economics, and Public Policy.

The maximum award is $1,000. Grants may be used to cover out-of-pocket expenses associated with gathering data or conducting interviews in support of a Ph.D. dissertation. Grant awards are limited to one per academic year and two per life-time.

Deadline: There is no specific deadline. Awards are made on a rolling basis; the Institute makes awards to strong applications as long as sufficient funds remain. (Funds are periodically refreshed by new contributions from donors.)

Procedures: Download and fill out the application form: (.pdf Format) : mini_apps.pdf. It will ask applicants to do the following:

  1. Write a short (2 pages or less) proposal
  2. Have your advisor write a brief (1 page or less) letter of support, indicating whether s/he supports your request as essential and whether s/he feels you have adequately explored other possible funding sources.
  3. Items 1 and 2 should be sent BY YOUR ADVISOR, along with the application, to
