IBER Research Funded by Outside Grants

Introduction

Most faculty research is funded by extramural grants—that is, by sources outside the UC Berkeley campus.  IBER is currently home to over 60 projects funded by extramural grants, with a book value of over $28 million.  These grants are listed below, and in most cases there is a link to an abstract.  For our principal research centers, a link is provided to the particular Center.

A few of these “awards” involve not the contribution of outside funds but of something almost as precious—data.  Access to sensitive data from the Census Bureau, from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, or the Panel Study of Income Dynamics housed at the University of Michigan all require elaborate terms-of-use agreements and are treated by the campus as “extramural awards.”

A modest amount of research is funded from sources internal to the University, often through departmental funds, such as Xlab mini-grants or departmental support for faculty summer research salaries. Research funded through IBER mini-grants is described separately.
