IBER Congratulates Graduate Researchers on Successes

Rachel Sullivan Robinson has become an Assistant Professor at the School of International Service, American University, Washington, D.C.. Rachel completed her Ph.D. in sociology and demography. Her research focuses on the politics of population and reproductive health in sub-Saharan Africa.

Additionally, Chris Rider has accepted a teaching post at Goizueta Business School of Emory University. Zachary Grossman has been offered teaching jobs at UC Santa Barbara and Washington State University.

IBER Faculty Research has World Reach
Alain de Janvry, Professor of Agriculture and Resource Economics, has co-authored the World Bank's World Development Report for 2008.

Conference on the 'Economics of Competition and Innovation'
The Competition Policy Center held a conference on the "Economics of Competition and Innovation" on October 26-27, 2007 at the Alumni House on Berkeley campus. Topics included The Design of Intellectual Property Rights; Competition Issues Related to Standards Development Organizations; Theoretical Analysis of the Relationship Between Competition and Intellectual Property; Empirical Studies of Competition; Investment in Research and Development; and the Output of Inventions; Analysis of Law and Economics of Policies Related to Intellectual Property and Research and Development. Conference on 'Health and Im/migration'
A conference dealing with two of the most important issues facing Californians - health (and healthcare) and immigration - held on Wednesday, April 18. "TransNational Health: New Research on Im/Migration and Health" was the first major event sponsored by the Health and Immigration Consortium, a three-way partnership among Berkeley, UC San Francisco, and UC's Office of the President.

IBER Economists in Top 13 Nationwide
Three of IBER's faculty investigators, Raj Chetty, Stefano DellaVigna, and Ulrike Malmendier, have been named in the NY Times as among the top thirteen untenured economists in the nation. See the story by David Leonhardt and links to the young economists' webpage.

More Reality in Economics?
Prof. George Akerlof is "taking on some of the profession’s most sacred cows"--including the assumptions about human behavior underlying many of Milton Friedman's theories. A copy of Prof. Akerlof's presidential address at the AEA is also available.
